BRIEGLEB JOHN PHILLIPS of Hayward, California died Sunday, August 5, 2001 at Eden Hospital in Castro Valley. He was 78. He was born August 30, 1922 in Los Angeles, California to Gustav Arminius Briegleb and Sarah Briegleb. He married Mae Belle Hall in 1947 in Piedmont, California, who preceded him in death in 1993. John attended UCLA from 1941-1942, then enlisted in the Navy, becoming a naval aviator who saw active duty in the Pacific. He studied law after the war at San Francisco State University. After further service during the Korean War, he settled in Hayward, California, where he became a practicing attorney for over 40 years. He was known in the legal community by the nickname: John Biglip, a slight mispronunciation of his name, as he was never known to be one short with words in any courtroom or public forum. After leaving law in the late 1990's, he often referred to himself a retired liar (lawyer?), although he also said that old lawyers never retire! , ! they just lose their appeal. When asked how a former naval aviator could fall into such a state of disrepair, he dryly explained: ""Age my boy, age?''. He always had compliments for the ladies. To the last at his nursing home, he was known as one with a dry wit, who calmly said he just could not do anymore what he used to do! His good natured humor will live on in many he touched. If you have raised a slight smile in reading this otherwise sad notification of the passing of John, he would be pleased. Survivors include three sons: Bruce Phillips Briegleb of Boulder, Colorado; Brian Hall Briegleb of Hayward, California; and Bradley John Briegleb of Clayton, California; three grandchildren, Alana Talbot Briegleb of Clayton, California, Sophia Kyriaki and Christina Hall Briegleb of Boulder, Colorado. An open casket viewing will be held on Saturday, August 11, 2001 from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., and a Memorial Service on Saturday, August 18, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. both at Machado's HILLSIDE CHAPEL, 1051 Harder Rd., Hayward CA. Machado's HILLSIDE CHAPEL (510) 537-6600.
