He served in the 4th Vermont Infantry Co. I during the Civil War.

He was a longtime member of the George H. Ward Post 10 of the Grand Army of the Republic in Worcester.

He also served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the 2nd Massachusetts Infantry during the Spanish American War.
