US Congressman. A member of the Republican Party, he served the State of Alabama's 7th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives from 1965 until 1967. His father was an engineer, his mother was a school teacher, he studied at Massey Business College and later attained his Law degree from the Birmingham School of Law. He worked in the petroleum industry, prior to his service with the United States Army during World War II. During this experience, he served as a artillery commander under General George S. Patton. He later served as an intelligence officer. Following his return home, he resumed his career in the oil industry and founded his own company. Martin had an unsuccessful bid for US Senator from Alabama in 1962, prior to defeating attorney George C. Hawkins for the US Congressional seat. Additionally, he ran unsuccessfully for Governor of Alabama in 1966. After leaving Washington, he served as Commissioner of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
