Congregationalist Missionary. He was best-known as one of the earliest translators of The Bible into Chinese language editions. In 1816, he travelled to Mallacca with the London Missionary Society, which was at the time a printing center. He learned Malay and was active in missionary projects throughout China before founding the London Missionary Society Press in Shanghai. In 1840 he helped translate The Bible into Chinese after many years of research. This project was finally completed in 1847, and was considered an exact translation and true to the original Bible.
