Molly M. Reeder
November 21, 1922 - October 27, 2017

Molly Ailey Reeder was born on November 21, 1922 in Depew, Oklahoma to Harley and Fanny Ailey residents of Depew where both her grandparents and great-grand parents had come in the early 1900’s. She passed away in Norman, Oklahoma on October 27, 2017 surrounded by loved ones.

Molly graduated from Milfay High School as class salutatorian, and a four year honor student. She participated in music, basketball, and was the high school queen. It was in high school that she first met a handsome basketball star who was known as the “Milfay Flash,” a name given by the coach. They dated steady all four years of high school.

She graduated from Milfay at a young age. She attended Bristow Junior College for one year. The following year she went to Central State College (UCO) at Edmond.

She began her career at Gypsy High School teaching half day English, History, and moving to the third grade in the afternoon. In addition to her classes she was the high school girl’s basketball coach, sponsor of the senior class, and director of three-act plays.

Molly married the love of her life, Ivan Reeder, October 12, 1942 at Depew, Oklahoma in the home of her childhood Baptist minister. At this time World War II had already been declared and Ivan was preparing to enlist in the U.S. Navy where three other brothers were in the Naval Military Service.

She continued her teaching career while Ivan was in the service. She graduated from Central State College with a B.S. degree. She taught school in Oklahoma City while Ivan was completing his degree and also playing basketball for the Broncos of Central State College.

Her motto was “believe in what you want to do and you can do it.” She wouldn’t allow any student to consider even for one second the idea of failure. “Everyone can learn to read,” was an expression that she used throughout her career. She believed that when children learn to read well they can master most of the other subjects.

Molly Reeder believed that the Fine Arts should be included in every school’s curriculum. She stated that they help students develop a lifetime talent. Her two sons, Danny and Ronny, had piano lessons from kindergarten through high school. Molly began piano lessons and continued five years after retirement. She believed that when one plays a musical instrument it helps to remove stress and brings more joy to life.

She was a life-time member of the OEA, NEA, and OREA. In 1979 she was selected Creek County Teacher of the Year. In 1984 she was selected to serve on the State Committee at Oklahoma City to help write the State Department of Education Suggested Learner Outcomes for the Students of Oklahoma. In 1996, she became a member of “Who’s Who among America’s Teachers.” During her 47 years of teaching she taught one fourth generation and six third generations of students.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Depew for 55 years and was co-teacher of the Adult Sunday School class for 48 years.

In 2003, she experienced two tragic losses; her soul-mate, Ivan, passed away. One month and 15 days later her beloved son, Ron, died suddenly.

Molly moved to Shawnee in 1994 and Norman in 2016. She attended University Baptist Church. She joined the Pottawatomie Retired Teachers Association and the Kappa Kappa Iota teacher’s organizations. She also participated in the Shawnee Senior Aerobics Class.

Preceding her in death was her beloved husband, Ivan, her son Ron, and a grandson, Michael Shawn Reeder, her parents, a brother, and other relatives.

Survivors include her son and his wife, Drs. Dan and Stacy Reeder of Norman; Judith Reeder of Tulsa; Grandchildren, Jason and Devon, Laura, Dane, Raye, and Meg and Zach Reeder-Cramer; two great-grandchildren, Julia and Abbey Reeder; one sister Betty Bryson and other relatives.

Private graveside services were held at the Stroud Cemetery on October 30, 2017 under the direction of Hutchins Maples Matherly Funeral Home. Molly was known as a kind, thoughtful, and incredibly generous person. In lieu of flowers, cards of condolence may be sent to The Reeders, 4808 Beth Dean Drive, Norman, OK 73072.
