The Stirling, crewed by six airmen, was lost without trace during heavy rains and dense fog, and it wasn’t until 21 June 1945 that the crash site was located at Andtjernâsen in the hills near Sørkedalen valley, about 10 miles north of Oslo, where it had crashed into the hillside and exploded, killing all 24 individuals aboard (the crew, AVM Scarlett-Streatfeild, Major Juliebø and sixteen paratroopers who were accompanying Scarlett-Streatfeild).

He added ‘Streatfeild’ to his own name in 1939 [his name is often miss-spelled, even in official documents; the Commonwealth War Graves Commission has corrected the spelling in the on-line records and will correct the spelling on his headstone when it is due to be renewed].
