Ontario: Laurie Kanis never met a garage sale she didn’t love! A card-carrying member of the “Garage Sale Club of America” she just couldn’t resist a good find. It was a natural extension of her generosity and big heart: most of her finds became gifts to people she knew with needs.

Remembered for her unconditional love, Laurie passed into the Lord’s care Wednesday evening November 1, 2017 from Avita Ontario Hospital following an apparent heart attack. She was 58.

Born Laurie Lynne Atkins in Mansfield September 13, 1959 to Charles H. and Mary Anna (Jeffrey) Atkins, she was graduated from Madison High School in 1978. After a short time as a home health aide, she worked 18 years with GTE/Verizon/Frontier with customer service. Recently, she began cleaning Cornerstone Grace Brethren Church.

Even in the face of adversity, Laurie maintained a positive attitude, though she couldn’t maintain a schedule: Laurie was always running late!

She was a gifted crafter, who excelled in beading, making necklaces and sewing: Laurie quilted projects for many family members. An excellent cook and baker, she was renowned for her deviled eggs, sweet tea, gobs (moon pies) and ginger cream cookies.

She was a member of Woodville Grace Brethren Church and more recently attended Cornerstone Grace Brethren Church.

She is survived by her husband Leslie, whom she married April 28, 2002 in Las Vegas in the Little White Chapel before Elvis!

Also surviving are her son Aaron (Lorelei Wynn) Finley of Mansfield; stepdaughter Melissa (Jason) Snow of Ashland; grandchildren Mercedes (Anthony Davis) Ayers, Kaleb Finley, Aaryanna Hicks, Christopher Hoffman and Brock Wood; great grandson Brantley Davis; her mother Mary Anna Atkins of Burbank; siblings the Rev. Dr. David (Joyce) Atkins of Wooster, Daniel (Lori) Atkins of Lexington, Jane Atkins Hicks (fiancé Bruce Morrison) of Smithville, and Luke (Sherry) Wheeler of Saluda, SC; cherished friends Jan & Carl Bryant of Aiken, SC; along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her daughter Angela Weirick on February 28, 2014; and her father on August 5, 2011.

The Kanis family will receive friends Sunday, November 5, 2017 from 1 to 5 p.m. in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home, where her funeral service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. Her brother David will officiate. Burial will follow in Lexington Cemetery.

Snyder Funeral Home is honored to serve Laurie’s family.
