Velma J. Barnard, 82, of St. Marys, passed away November 4, 2017, at Marietta Memorial Hospital. She was born on October 1, 1935, in Pleasants County, a daughter of the late Everett G. and Opal A. Bailey Higgins.
Velma was a 1952 graduate of St. Marys High School, where she was the valedictorian of her class. She attended Glenville State College and taught at Shawnee School and St. Marys Elementary School. She was a member of Nine Mile United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Lewis, whom she married on October 14, 1966; her daughter, Kristi Jones, and her husband Steven, of Belmont; her son, Kerry Barnard, and his wife Becky, of Glen Allen, VA; grandson, Kyle Jones, of Belmont; granddaughter, LeeAnn Barnard, of Glen Allen, VA; her sister, Sharon (Jarvis) Gilbert of Bunnlevel, NC; and sister-in-law, Elizabeth Higgins of St. Marys. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Delmas Ray, Franklin Delno, Marvin Clayton, and Francis Gale Higgins.
Private graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family.
