Joe lost his father at age only thirteen, and was then raised by his widowed mother and older sibling, Walter. He went on to receive a good education and married well. He and Mamie were married in Washington on 25 April 1883, some time afterwards moving back to New York where Joe then lived and worked, and some years later moved to Montclair, Essex County, NJ, outside New York City, where they remained many years before returning to Washington. They left no offspring.

The middle initial J was noted in one Washington city directory of 1891 for "Joseph J Hellen", thought correct for Joe, and which almost certainly stood for Johnson, but cannot be confirmed. In all other records, including family records, he was always Joseph or just Joe.

Joe became very successful early, noted as the treasurer of Pacific Mail Steamship Company in New York by 1879 and an Assistant Secretary of the Union Pacific Railroad by 1910.

It is confirmed that he and Mamie are interred together in this section and lot, the large monument shared, but with separate flat headstones marking the actual burial locations, Mamie's not yet photographed.
