Bertha Lucille Caesar, celebrating 90 years of life, has been promoted into the presence of her Lord on Wednesday, November 8, 2017.
She was born May 16, 1927, at home in Milton Township (Creston), Wayne County, Ohio, to John Ulrich and Lena Bertha Calame Wuthrich.
Her childhood years were in Wayne County and the Spencer and Homerville areas of Medina County, attending Homer School during high school. As a young adult she lived in Wooster working for the College of Wooster.
In 1950 she married Alex Caesar at the Wooster Grace Brethren Church. They settled in Medina to raise their family. After 46 years, they moved to Lodi in 1996.
She was self-employed performing child-care in her home for 30 years, retiring in 1992, which fulfilled her dream of being a teacher. Nearly 1,000 Medina area children knew her as "Mrs. Caesar" during this period. Mrs. Caesar's kids were gently and lovingly encouraged to follow Mrs. Caesar's rules based on safety goals, while imparting values from her strong Christian faith to build positive relationship interaction. Her immense love for children was received and recognized by these children and parents. She frequently expressed what a rewarding career she experienced -- priceless memories, and appreciated continued communication from these families over the years. She received the American Association of University Women award for Outstanding Woman of Distinction from the Medina County chapter in 1978.
She was a member of Homerville Grace Brethren Church with untiring support of numerous ministries for 75 years. She taught Sunday School, Junior Church, SMM, and Vacation Bible School. She served as deaconess, Sunday School secretary, greeter, and all-around encourager. In 2000 she received the Senior Medal of Ministry Award at the Christian Education Conference of GBC in Winona Lake, Indiana. As a member of the Women of Grace ladies group she began missionary correspondence in 1960, continuing faithfully for 55 years, annually sending 300 birthday and anniversary cards to overseas workers, spouses, and children serving Grace Brethren International Missions in Asia, Europe, Africa, Central and South America. Each card included a personal hand-written note.
Bertha expressed artistic talents in various craft hobbies, home decorating and hospitality, immaculate housekeeping, and beautiful penmanship shared with family and friends in a multitude of handwritten notes and cards, receiving a blue ribbon and $5 award for penmanship from the fair as a child. She loved music, was proud of her swiss heritage, and learned swiss yodeling from her father who was born in Switzerland. Often her sisters would sing together, harmonizing and yodeling, as requested by classmates. Bertha also loved sports, especially basketball and baseball, attending basketball games to cheer for her uncle John Calame, a star player, as well as Cleveland Cavaliers and Cleveland Indians games. Her enthusiasm for the Cleveland Cavaliers only increased with the addition of LeBron James, her favorite player, celebrating joyously as they achieved the NBA Championship in 2016!
She was a generous and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother leaving a legacy of Godly love with her family and all who entered into her life.
