Jannes (Jan) Evelyn Quell, 93, of Red Wing, died of cancer Wednesday, November 15, 2017, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester.

Jan was born on March 10, 1924, in Red Wing, the daughter of Alton and Lydia (Scheid) Andrews. Her mother tragically passed away when she was 4 in 1929 with the birth of her brother. Her father later remarried Sadie Larson. She grew up on a farm in Hartland Township near Bay City, Wisconsin and attended Country Forest Home School. She graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1942. After high school, Jannes used the different spelling of Janice for her name since Jannes was often mistaken for James. Janice married Merlyn Quell on November 11, 1944, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Red Wing. They have lived at various other locations including Virginia and South Carolina during the war, Forest Lake, Minnesota where they owned a resort, and 40 years in southern California before moving back to Red Wing in 1996 after retiring. She worked for the Red Wing Marine Motors, Co., the Civil Service in Portsmouth Naval Yard, Virginia, and the OPA in Red Wing during WWII. She retired from Sears in Northridge, California in 1986.
Jan was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Red Wing and served on the altar guild and quilting. She also volunteered at the Goodhue County History Center in Red Wing. She enjoyed sewing, flower gardening, handicrafts, painting, pets and bird watching. She traveled extensively throughout the US and Europe as well as other places overseas.

Janice leaves behind her children, a son, Jerry Quell of Red Wing; and a daughter, Robin (Mats Holgersson) Quell of Fellingsbro, Sweden. Her parents, one brother LaVerne Andrews, and her husband Merlyn Quell preceded her in death.

Her celebration of life will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 29, 2017, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Red Wing with Reverend Kristen Schlauderaff officiating. Burial will take place at St. John’s Cemetery at a later date. Memorials are preferred to the Pierce County Historical Association or the Humane Society of Goodhue County. Funeral arrangements are by the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel.
