Mel married Marlene E. Maag on 16 Jun 1956 in Calhoun County. They were the parents of 3 children.
Mel served in the United States Air Force for 20 years. He eventually worked as a jet aircraft 1st Class Petty Officer Specialist on the F4J Phantom on Squadron 213.
While he was stationed overseas, Marlene returned to Illinois from California to stay with her parents. Mel was later assigned to Texas. Over the years, they lived in Godfrey, Illinois and Calhoun County, Illinois, and, eventually, settled in Jerseyville, Jersey County, Illinois.
After Mel retired from the military, he worked at Olin as a mill rite. He was a member of Alton VFW Post 1308.
Mel enjoyed gardening and was known for his well-maintained yard in Jerseyville. He was mechanically gifted and very capable of fixing almost anything. He liked to dance, but his favorite pastime was spending time with his family and friends.
Marlene passed away in 2015.
Mel died at his home 2 1/2 years later. At the time of his death, he was 82 years, 5 months and 29 days old.
He was survived by 2 daughters and 1 son-in-law; 1 son; 7 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and his twin brother.
In addition to his wife, Mel was preceded in death by his mother.
Visitation was held from 10:30 a.m. until the beginning of noon funeral services on 21 Nov 2017 at Gress, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Hardin, Calhoun County, Illinois. Burial was at Hardin City Cemetery in Hardin with military honors performed by the Brussels American Legion.
The family requested that memorials, if desired, be made to Alton VFW Post 1308.
