He was the son of Dr. Miles Henry Alderson and Sarah Ann Eva (Clotfelter) Alderson. He married Lillie Belle Millheisler in Salina, Kansas, in 1896. Their daughter Gretta Mae was born May 26, 1900, in Salina, Kansas. The family lived for a short time in Wichita Falls, Texas, before moving to California. Mr. Alderson was a construction contractor.

Death notice published in the Los Angeles Times, June 26, 1938: Virgil W. Alderson, 64, died Friday, June 24, beloved husband of Lillie B. Alderson, father of Mrs. Charles S. Tanner; also survived by three sisters and a brother in the east. Services Monday, 11 a.m. at Edwards Brothers Colonial Mortuary; burial Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
