Joseph L. Tinney Jr., 73, formerly of the Overbrook section of Philadelphia, who produced and directed television shows and TV commercials, died last Wednesday at his apartment in New York City.
Mr. Tinney, who also owned a home in Longport, N.J., for 30 years, most recently volunteered his services to the Archdiocese of New York and directed televised Masses to homebound people there.
He was born in Philadelphia and graduated from St. Joseph's Preparatory School. He served as an officer in the Navy during World War II.
After the war, he graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and became a director at WCAU-TV, said his son-in-law, Dan Dagit.
He subsequently joined the William Esty advertising agency in New York and directed the Colgate Comedy Hour while there. He then became supervisor for L&M cigarette commercials that appeared on The Spike Jones Show, and for Ziv-United Artists in California, producers of the Highway Patrol and Harbormaster TV shows.
He is survived by a daughter, Maria Dagit; a sister; and two grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass will be said at 11 a.m. today at St. John Vianney Roman Catholic Church, Conshohocken State and Youngsford Roads, Gladwyne. Friends may call after 10 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, West Conshohocken.
The family suggests memorial contributions to St. Joseph's Preparatory School, 1733 Girard Ave., Philadelphia 19130.
