I am alive, doing very well and living in Overland Park, KS. This memorial was created in order to capture family lineage.

Along with travelling and many other interests, I also enjoy ancestry and researching my family's lineage. I thought I would document some of that information here. Maybe this information would help others with their ancestry research.

In 2019 my wife, Becky, and I visited our son, Ben Garten, at his home in Augusta (Martinez), Georgia. While on our trip to the southeastern part of the US in our 24 foot motor home RV, I got a chance to travel to the the areas where two of my ancestors had lived. They are:

GGF04: Reuben Garton, 1769-1812, Born: Virginia Colony, Buried: Harrison Co, Kentucky
Note: GGF means great grandfather.

GGF07: Capt. William Garton, 1635-1708, Born and Buried : Lancaster, Virginia Colony

*** Paternal Lineage ***

GGF04: Reuben Garton proved to be very interesting for several reasons, including:
a. The surname Garton/Garten changed with Reuben's children's generation. Unfortunately the reason for this change is unknown as no documentation survives that would provide an explanation.

b. There is very, very little information still existing which documents the lives of Reuben and his wife, Anna. A great deal of research and dogged persistence was required in order to piece things together. See Reuben Garton's Memorial on FindAGrave.com for more details.
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/185352601/reuben-hugh-garton

c. With my research and finally my FindAGrave.com Memorial entry for Reuben Garton I was finally able to tie together the top portion of the US Garton family tree with the bottom Garten portion on this website.

d. My research showed a pattern of several generations of Gartons/Gartens, including Reuben's three sons, migrating westward in the US in search of farming and land-owning opportunities. Immigration from England to the Virginia colony by the Gartons was very likely for this same land-owning reason.

GGF05 and GGF06 proved to be very interesting:

GGF05: John "Philip" Boyer was born in the Pennsylvania Colony and is fully documented as having fought in the American Revolutionary War and officially verified by the Sons of the American Revolution. It is believed that his father and uncles also fought, but this unfortunately cannot be verified. His father, John Henry, and at least one uncle died as a result of their fighting during the war.

GGF06: John Henry Boyer was born in Bavaria (Germany) and immigrated with his parents and siblings to the Pennsylvania Colony and their new country, later becoming the United States of America. John Henry immigrated as Johann Heinrich Beyer and changed it to John Henry Boyer (less German sounding). The Beyers very likely immigrated to the Pennsylvania colony for farming and land-owning opportunities.

John "Philip" Boyer (born: Pennsylvania colony) fought in the American Revolutionary War along with his German immigrant father, John Henry Boyer, and uncles. See their Memorials on FindAGrave.com for more details.

SAR* means Sons of the American Revolutionary War.

My ancestry work was helped greatly by a relative in my Boyer lineage, Edra Boyer Mikkelsen, of Nebraska. Edra did DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) ancestry work for our Boyer lineage in the pre-personal computer, pre-internet days (much more difficult). I thank Edra for her work!

John "Philip" Boyer has been fully documented and certified as having fought in the American Revolutionary War. This certification provides those of us with this Boyer lineage to be SAR or DAR members, after going through the certification process.

Edra's DAR research was unfortunately not recognized by SAR due to being done during a time when DAR did not require rigorous proof like birth certificates, marriage certificates and the like. It was explained that back then they generally took you at your word. For my SAR membership I built on Edra's work and satisfied SAR's very detailed and thorough requirements.

The easiest path to SAR (and possibly DAR) certification and membership is to do a reference to my SAR membership. My SAR National Number is 206641. You only need to provide proof of being part of the same Boyer lineage as me.

Good luck with your Ancestry research and have fun with it! I certainly did.
