The Civil War, (1861-1865). On 8 August 1862, Lafayette was 23 years old, and enlisted in Captain Swifts, Company F, of the 17th Michigan Infantry. John Jr. Barber was examined by Medical Doctors on 11 December 1862 in New Alexandria, Virginia and found to be "incapable of performing the duties of a soldier because of an Inguinal Hernia of the right side, contracted while in the Service". On the 21 December 1862 John Jr. Barber was Medically Discharged and sent home to the farm to recover. John's medical condition worsened over the following months, and on 8 October 1863, at the age of 24 years, 9 months, 22 days, he died on the farm in Lyndon Township.
