On Friday, November 3rd, 2017, following a long, spirited and courageous battle with a host of illnesses, the mercies of the Eternal One once again intervened and Ertha Leon House (Carter) was lovingly granted entrance into the Presence of God.

Ertha, or Sissie, as she was fondly called by her loved ones, was born, April 21, 1938 to Essie Mae (Abel) Carter and Leon Carter in Bamberg, SC. She was married to Willie L. House, Sr. in 1956 and enjoyed the love and admiration of 6 children, 10 grandchildren, and numerous great grands.

The branches of her tender, sometimes tough, but always “on time” love extended generously to her God, her community, and to her family. This family and her sphere of influence was often hard to fence in as it included her adoring husband, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, and her loving siblings. Her’s was family brought “home” by her children, her extended family by blood, family by the Blood, family up and down her street, family on her job. Her “Whosoever” was a beautiful tree spreading high, broad and wide, watered, and nourished by the rains of her abiding compassion, her love and obedience to her Unfailing Lord and Savior, trimmed and kept by her God given wisdom and patience.

She attended the York City Schools including the once segregated Smallwood elementary school. (Sissie, returned to complete her high School education in order to set an example for her children.) In August 2017, she and her beloved husband Bill House celebrated 61 years of marriage.

Sissie became a member of Shiloh Baptist Church under the pastorate of Rev. Richard J. Manning. She sang on the Manning’s Chorus. Later she aligned with the Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church (Rev. Nathaniel Johnson and Rev. Ryan Johnson) where she served with distinction as a Deaconess.

She worked at York Hospital as a Nurses Aid and Nurses Assistant for 33 years. In her leisure she enjoyed spending memorable times with her husband, children (and their children, and their children), her loving siblings and extended family. Studying God’s Word and participating in a vigorous and vital Women’s Ministry at her church were particular loves of her life. She was the heart of her family a light extending the Author of Hope to those without families and to others she felt needed care. Many who were not born of her, claimed her as Mom or a mother figure. Her home was a center of love, acceptance, prayer and some of the best foods this side of Glory.

Ertha/Sissie loved life and loved to laugh. Her heart bore a love that was at once musical and a veritable garden filled with the scent of her Master and Lord. She loved to support and there were (and remain) many who maintain complete confidence in her great love of and for them.

She leaves to mourn her loss and cherish her memories, two daughters, four sons, her brothers and sisters, brother in law, sisters in law, loving grandchildren and great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, too many to number or list.

Sissie was recently preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bill and a sister in law:Barbara Carter
