Hazel worked for the City of Durham for 20 years as an electrician, where he specialized in repairing motors. He then took early retirement, got his NC State Electrical Contractor license, and started his own business, Baker's Electric. Hazel loved the Lord and served Him faithfully throughout his life. He was an active member of Durham Memorial Baptist Church where he was a part of the Soul Winners Sunday School Class and the Durham Memorial Dartball Team. He loved his family and friends with all of his heart. He also loved to hunt and fish and loved to tell stories. Hazel made a lasting impression on everyone he met.
Hazel is survived by his wife, Sophie Baker; son, Robert Baker and his wife, Karen; daughter, Amy Baker; stepdaughter, Jennifer Martin and her husband, Rodney; sisters Eleanor Kapiko and Jo Ann Wright and her husband Sam; brother, Lawson Baker; grandson, Brandon Baker and fiancé, Krystal Chisholm; granddaughter, Stacy Baker; step-granddaughter, Heather Blackburn; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Baker; brother, Biven Baker; and sister, Mendy Moore.
Funeral services will be held at Durham Memorial Baptist Church at 133 Robbins Road, Durham, NC on Monday, October 23 at 2 p.m.
The family will receive visitors at Hudson Funeral Home on Sunday, October 22, 2017 from 6-8 p.m. The family would like to thank everyone for the outpouring of love and support during his illness.
