For most of his adult life, he resided in Houston where he was an accountant for Shell Petroleum Corporation. He served in the Army Air Forces during World War II. He was a Mason and Shriner. He was living near Palestine at the time of his death there. He is buried beside his son, Frederick Philip Broughton. He was survived by his mother of Houston; one son, Frederick P. Broughton of Palestine; two brothers, H. G. Broughton of Baytown and V. H. Broughton of Crockett; four sisters, Mrs. James (Ann) Pritchett of Baytown, Mrs. C. H. (Celeste) Phillips of Houston, Mrs. Jack (Tiny) Gatewood of Whitehouse, and Mrs. Dave (Eloise) Wyatt of Rosenburg. His obituary appeared in the Palestine Herald-Press, Thursday, 6 February 1975.
