Phyllis was born in Kentucky to Suetta and Troy Shepherd on March 16, 1939. She and her sister Virginia Avenelle were also close friends. They lived on the same steet as famous songstress Loretta Lynn in Kentucky. At some point her mother and father moved the family to Michigan.
Phyllis married Marvin Lynwood Holton and had a daughter, Suetta Holton (named after Phyllis's mother) and then a son, John Charles Holton. Phyllis and Marvin divorced.
Phyllis married William Baker and had two sons, Tommy and Spencer. Mr. Baker and Phyllis later divorced.
Phyllis moved to Arizona when her kids were young while Suetta stayed in Michigan. When John got married and had grandkids Phyllis loved being a "granny". She said to call her "Granny" because she came from hillbilly stock. Granny died of cancer in Phoenix, Arizona on December 29, 2002.
She was predeceased by her son John on May 8, 2000.
