"Don D. Smith, age 87, of Talpa, died Tuesday, November 28, 2017, in Shannon Medical Center in San Angelo. Graveside service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 2, at the Talpa Cemetery Pavilion with Rev. Pat Riley officiating and assisted by Rev. Zachery Ailshie. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home in Coleman.

"He was born Donnie D. Smith on January 21, 1930, in Coleman, Texas, the only child of J. C. Smith and Ida Merl McClure Smith. He grew up in Talpa and attended school there, graduating from Talpa High School. Don was a rancher most of his life and continued that occupation until Monday of this week. He was proud of the fact that, at his age, he was still able to ride a horse and attend to his ranch work. Don was one of the first people to bring Boer goats to this county, traveling to New Zealand to select the goats that were sent to his ranch in Talpa, Texas. He also raised beef cattle. He was a member for a number of years at Immanuel Baptist Church in Talpa and had recently joined Glen Cove Baptist Church in Glen Cove. Don had a zest for life and was loved by many people. He enjoyed traveling and had traveled all over the world.

"He is survived by Walter and Ruby Kemp, who Don considered his son and daughter-in-law; Drew Jack and Ross Jackson, who Don considered as grandsons; several cousins, including Wayne and Betty McClure of Coleman.

"He was preceded in death by his parents.

"Memorials may be made to the Junior American Boer Goat Association, 1207 S. Bryant Blvd., Ste. C, San Angelo, Texas 76903.

"Visitation will be held on Friday, December 1, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home, 400 W. Pecan Street, Coleman, Texas 76834."
