Nova was born in Whitewright in Grayson Co, TX to William and Emma Ann "Emer" Shields Putteet. Her parents are buried in Elm Grove Cemetery in Westminster, Collin Co, TX. Nova shares a stone with her husband, William "J. C." Commander. Their daughter, Effie Commander Holt is also buried in Ferguson Cemetery. Their son, Glen W. Commander, is buried in Roselawn Park. Nova was residing in Palestine at the time of her death there. She was survived by three son, Glen Commander, J. C. Commander and Joe Commander, all of Palestine; five daughters, Louise Johnson of Hugoton, KS; Era Turman of Bartlesville, OK, Effie Holt of Dallas, Elise Walston of Ardmore, OK and Beulah Wortek of Houston; one brother, Willie Putteet of McKinney; one sister, Ivy Lee Wright of Pasadena; 30 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Her obituary appeared in the Palestine Herald-Press, Friday, 28 July 1989.
