YAKIMA - Esther K. Arensen, of Yakima died and went to be with her Lord on March 22, 2007 at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital.
Esther was born on April 2, 1919 in Poulsbo, WA to W. Gregorius and Clara Digerness. She was the youngest of six children. The family moved to Bainbridge Island when she was 8 years old. She graduated from Bainbridge High School in 1936 and later attended the Bible Institute of Los Angeles graduating in 1940. On October 19, 1940 she was married to Edward H. Arensen of Yakima.
After graduation she worked at the Children's Orthopedic Hospital in Seattle for one year. They were then accepted by the Africa Inland Mission to work in the country then called Tanganyika Territory in East Africa. But due to the war, they were delayed in leaving and so served for a time in Arizona doing missionary work under the Migrant Gospel Fellowship. Later, returning to the Yakima area, her husband served as pastor of the Ahtanum Pioneer Church. They served there for 2 1/2 years.
In 1946 they left for Tanganyika Territory to serve as missionaries among the Basukuma tribe where they stayed until 1958. During that time Esther learned the Kisukuma language and did visitation in the neighboring villages. She also opened up and ran a health-care clinic for the people in the isolated village of Kahunda.
In 1959 they were transferred to Kenya to start a Christian magazine for the African readers. Esther served as the secretary and accountant for the magazine. For many years she taught Sunday school to the missionary children who attended a nearby school. She also helped start Bible clubs in six neighboring Kenyan elementary schools. They served 30 years at Kijabe in this literature ministry before they retired in 1990 after spending a total of 44 years in Africa.
Her hobbies included reading, doing jigsaw and crossword puzzles, flower arranging and stamp collecting.
She is survived by her five sons and their wives. All five sons are involved in full-time Christian ministry: Jonathan and his wife Barbara in Tanzania, Allan (Lanny) and his wife Carla in England; Cameron and his wife Ester Ruth in the United Arab Emirates, Sheldon and his wife Kimberly in Kenya and Brian and his wife Patricia in Kenya. Esther is also survived by fourteen grandchildren; Lisa, Jeffrey, Michael, Kristine, Katherine, Drew, Dennis, Heath, Reid, Blake, Malindi, Philip, Bruce and Kerith, and 8 great- grandchildren.
Esther was preceded in death by her husband, Edward, her parents, three sisters, her grandson Benjamin and her daughter-in-law Janis (Anderson) Arensen.
Visitation will be held from Noon until 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 24 at Keith & Keith 9th Ave Chapel. Burial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 25, 2007 at West Hills Memorial Park followed by a Memorial Service beginning at 3:00 p.m. at Ahtanum Pioneer Church.
