Mary Katherine (Kurtz) Protheroe, 79, of Punta Gorda, FL returned to her Lord on February 8, 2010. She was born on September 22, 1930 in Marshalltown, Iowa. She retired from Iowa Illinois Gas & Electric in Davenport, IA and moved to Punta Gorda in 2000. Kay was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Punta Gorda. She was active in the community at Windmill Village, always there to spice up the many events she and her husband Dick participated in. Full of the spirit of life, Kay enjoyed spending time in the great outdoors with her wonderful friends--kayaking, walking or playing bridge. She loved all of God's creations and was passionate about saving the earth. Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints. Kay will be greatly missed by the love of her life, William Richard "Dick" Protheroe; daughters, Pamela Protheroe and Peggy (Dan) Blount; sons, Tom (Sue) Protheroe; Jerry (Sue) Protheroe and Rick (Theresa) Protheroe; 15 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
Dick spread his wife's cremated ashes in the prairie area of Prairie Creek Wildlife Refuge. Kay loved the prairie and said that was where she wanted her ashes to be. After Dick died in 2011, his children spread some of his ashes there, also. Some of his ashes was also taken to a lake where he often fished and spread there.
