June Elizabeth (Mead) Braun, 92, died Saturday, December 2, 2017 in the loving presence of several of her children and a granddaughter. She was a native of Pensacola, Florida and a resident of Norfolk since 1974. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Addison and Agnes Hansen Mead, her brother, Addison, and her loving husband Cmdr. Joseph J. Braun, USN, Retired.
June grew up a child of the Pensacola, Florida panhandle in a time, first, of the flappers and then the depression. While working at the Naval Air Station she met Joseph Braun, a young Naval aviator from Buffalo, New York, and they married in 1950. They subsequently moved to numerous duty stations across the country in places as diverse as Boston, Massachusetts and the Mojave Desert in California. She was a devoted Navy wife and the mother of a family that grew to include five boys and four girls (and almost always, a dog). Norfolk, Virginia became her home, living there during a tour of duty from 1963 to 1966 and then from 1974 on following her husband’s retirement from the Navy. At one time or another, all nine of her children attended St. Pius X Catholic School. Her prior travels remained a part of her. Chincoteague, Virginia retained a special place in her memory since that is where she began married life and had her first two children. The beaches and seafood reminded her of her childhood home. In St. Louis, she was excited to live for a time near her sister, Nancy, and her family, and along with her husband and children became a lifelong fan of the Cardinals baseball team. She also became a zealous fan of Notre Dame Football since two of her sons went to school there.
It is not the facts of June’s life that are remarkable; it is the character. She lived a life of kindness, devotion and integrity. To her husband she was the proverbial wind beneath his wings that assured their family would be cared for even when he had to be absent serving his country. To her children she was the steadfast rock that provided the foundation for a stable and loving home. Late in life she learned to use a computer so she could keep up with her far-flung children through email and social media. Her license plate, JEB9, exemplified her only vanity—her family. She was a loyal friend without favor or prejudice who was known for her warm smile and uncanny gift of listening. She was a longtime active member in St. Pius X Catholic Church and its Women’s Club. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas. She was conspicuously committed to serving those in need both through parish organizations and Meals on Wheels.
Her legacy will be carried on by her nine children: Richard J. Braun and his wife Diane of La Mesa, California; Stephen P. Braun and his wife Donna of San Diego, California; James T. Braun and his wife Kathye Faries of Sarasota, Florida; Judith A. Braun of Vernon Hills, Illinois; Patricia L. Leyva and her husband Eddie of Poway, California; Kathryn E. Erdei and her husband Jay of Virginia Beach, Virginia; Deborah J. Braun and her partner Amy Braun of Springfield, Virginia; David M. Braun and his wife Karen of Vienna, Virginia; and Timothy J. Braun of Atlanta, Georgia. She is also survived by her brother Richard Mead of Pensacola, Florida, her sister Nancy Hereford of St. Louis, Missouri, her eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated in St. Pius X Catholic Church, 7800 Halprin Drive Norfolk, Virginia 23518 on Friday, December 15, 2017 at 11:30 AM followed by a reception in the Parish Hall.
