Dr. Steven Edward Hendrix Ph.D was born in Asheville, NC and passed away unexpectedly in Christiansted, St Croix, US Virgin Islands at the Gov. Juan F Luis Hospital. Steve was a 1974 graduate of Asheville High School. He earned his bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of North Carolina-Wilmington, his master's of arts degree in counseling from the University of North Carolina-Pembroke, and his PhD in Behavioral medicine from North Central University in Arizona. He was an associate professor at the University of the Virgin Islands and had previously taught at James Sprunt Community College and Sampson Community College in Wilmington, NC.
Additionally, he was the former owner of the CO-Ed Theater in Brevard NC. Steve was a well known local DJ in the Asheville area during the late 70's and early 80's and was a ham radio operator (Extra Class ham radio operator WB4WFU) for many years in addition to being a published author and skilled photographer. While living in the US Virgin Islands he started a local radio station, WPRT, and was a grief and guidance counselor in addition to being a professor. Following the back to back hurricanes Irma and Maria that devastated St Croix during the fall of 2017 he volunteered his time counseling island residents affected by the devastation. He loved helping others, teaching and his students and was an avid collector of classic cars and motorcycles.
Steve held memberships in several national professional associations including the American Psychological Association and the American Counseling Association. He was the author of numerous publications and papers in professional journals. At UVI, he played a major role in various initiatives in the School of Education, including its accreditation as a member of the unit's Teacher Education Advisory Committee and chair of the Counseling Advisory Committee. Additionally, he was responsible for the development of the graduate course titled "Ethics in Counseling" as well as for the development of the Master of Arts Degree in school counseling and guidance. He was very proud of the accomplishments of his students, many of whom are serving as school counselors and leaders in the U.S. Virgin Islands. In addition to his students on St. Croix, he also taught graduate students via teleconferencing on St. Thomas, St. John, St. Martin, and in the United States.
Steve further developed a course titled "Ethics in Educational Leadership" in the University of the Virgin Island's Educational Leadership for Change PhD degree tract and was looking forward to teaching PhD students in the spring. He inspired both his students and fellow faculty members. He was a colorful person and never gave up on his dreams.
In addition to his regular teaching assignments, Steve also enjoyed teaching automotive repair classes, anger management classes, and serving as a grief and guidance counselor. Many of his former students remember his Elvis impersonation shows and his singing in the band Brice's Creek in Wilmington.
Dr. Hendrix was predeceased by his mother and stepfather Ann and Jim Goss, his father James Alvin Hendrix, and his foster brother John Edward McElrath. Left to cherish his memory is his sister Kathy Hendrix Ballard and her husband Terry of Asheville, NC.
