Jack Akin Butler, Age 80 of Nashville, A prominent Nashville Attorney, went to be with the Lord Thursday, December 7, 2017.

Mr. Butler was the son of the late Evelyn Collins and General Howard F. Butler of Nashville, and the brother of the late Evelyn Collins Todd.

He is survived by his loving, devoted high school sweetheart, Martha Lasley Butler, wife of 61 years; children Deborah Ballard (Mike), Lee Traut (Chris), and Jacqueline Kistler; his sister, Jill Butler Smith (Dan); 7 grandchildren John Michael Ballard (Tiffini), William Butler Ballard, Benjamin Butler Traut, Catherine Lee Traut, Courtney Stevens Kistler, Hailey Brooking Kistler, and Jack Thomas Kistler; one great granddaughter Emory Grace Ballard; and many nieces and nephews.

In his early years Mr. Butler was in the Air National Guard, attended law school by night while finishing his senior year at Vanderbilt, spent 20 years in the Tennessee Air National Guard and rose to the rank of Major and served as Director of Security, Director of Intelligence, Director of Riot Control Training, and Director of the Firing Range.

Mr. Butler graduated from MBA, Vanderbilt University, and the Nashville School of Law. He is best known for his contributions to the legal profession in Tennessee. In 1958 Mr. Butler was the youngest lawyer to be asked to teach at the Nashville School of Law where he taught 4th year Moot Court for 42 years. He was also the youngest person to be elected to the Board of Directors of the Nashville Bar Association and served as President of the Young Lawyers Barristers Club as well as the American Board of Trial Advocates. He was also President of the Police Union in 1972 and was on the Board of Trustees that founded Brentwood Academy in 1969.

Mr. Butler spent his life in service of others by helping thousands of people across Middle Tennessee in his 50 year-long law practice and his deep understanding of the law, kindness, and love of people. He holds the Preeminent AV rating from Martindale-Hubble which indicates his peers rank him at the top level of professional excellence, has been named to the Bar Registry of Preeminent Lawyers as well as Super Lawyers. He was also named one of the 100 Best Trial Lawyers in the Southeast. Mr. Butler was selected for inclusion in the Best Lawyers of America for Personal Injury for 25 years.

Mr. Butler enjoyed flying, hunting, racket ball, boating, and golf. He and his wife attended Forest Hills Baptist Church and he will leave behind a legacy of compassion, kindness, and caring for others. Mr. Butler was driven by a love and compassion for his fellow man that can be seen by everyone he touched: from his family life, to his friends, to his Moot Court students, to the way in which he conducted himself in court, and the way he truly cared for his clients.

Interment immediately following services at Woodlawn Memorial Park.
