Arthur Charles Meiners, Jr., 83, (CDR., USN, Ret.,) of Burke and Fairfax, VA, peacefully passed on to a better place December 5, 2017, at home with his family by his side after a brave fight from pneumonia and rapidly-progressing pulmonary fibrosis. Born in Kansas City, MO, Art (Chuck) was the son of the late Arthur Charles Meiners and Helen Leonard and was predeceased by wife MaryEllen O'Hern Meiners in 2011. Chuck is survived by three children, a daughter-in-law, as well as two grandchildren. Chuck is also survived by his two older sisters in Kansas City, as well as scores of Hodes/Meiners and Leonard nieces and nephews.

Chuck had fond memories of stocking shelves and delivering groceries for his father and grandfather (Herman) at the original Meiners Grocery Store as a youth. Chuck was a graduate of Lillis HS ('52) and Rockhurst College ('56). Chuck then joined the Navy, and after leaving Kansas City took his father's name of Arthur (Art). Art embarked on a brilliant Navy career with many highlights, including duty at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, during the Bay of Pigs where he continued to serve at "GITMO" while his family was evacuated. Art later served as Contracting Officer at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard from 1964-1967 and then as Supply Officer of USS Guadalcanal (LPH7). Thereafter he became the Director of Purchase Operations for the Naval Supply Systems Command in Washington, D.C. In 1970, Art became one of the very few Naval Officers ever to be selected to pursue a Ph.D. in Business Management, which he attained from George Washington Univ. in 1974. Art subsequently became the Business/Financial Manager at the Naval Systems Command in Washington, D.C. In 1977, Art retired after 20 years of distinguished service as a Navy Commander. Art then worked for Advanced Technology/PRC Inc. from 1977 to 1992. Some highlights from those years include serving as Principal Engineer and Asst. Group Manager of the Applied Management Group, Senior Consultant regarding Weapons Systems Acquisition, Division General Manager, and at the request of the Secretary of the Navy, taught Acquisition Streamlining for major Navy-buying organizations in Washington, D.C. and throughout the United States. During this time, Art was also an adjunct professor at The George Washington University and Marymount University. Following retirement from PRC, Art taught full-time at Marymount University, became Associate Dean of the School of Business, and authored a textbook published in 1994. Art retired from Marymount in 2013 with the status of Professor Emeritus. A devout Catholic his whole life, Art volunteered his time and talents to many church organizations throughout his lifetime, even sharing his faith with youth at the Juvenile Detention Center and leading a rosary group in the past few years. Art loved reading, watching the KC Chiefs and Washington Redskins football games, as well as KC Royals and Washington Nationals baseball games. Art particularly enjoyed playing cards; he was organizing and playing in several weekly poker and bridge groups until just recently. Art was always a devoted family man and friend, and words cannot begin to express how deeply his warmth, wit and wisdom will be missed. Our loss is Heaven's gain.

A memorial gathering will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 14, at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home, 9902 Braddock Rd., Fairfax, VA 22032. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 15, at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, 3700 Old Lee Hwy, Fairfax, VA 22030. Inurnment with full military honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
