Willard A. Hayes, 73, of Brazil, passed away unexpectedly December 10, 2017. He was born October 5, 1944 in Clay County, the son of Willard H. Hayes and Thelma Krider Hayes. He graduated from Staunton High School, and later attended Purdue University. On October 26, 1962 he was united in marriage to Charlotte Hughes Hayes, who preceded him in death on September 6, 2014.
As a young man, Willard worked at Stran-Steel in Terre Haute, but he was well known in the banking service where he was a bank officer at First Bank and Trust in Brazil. After his retirement from banking, he worked for Solar Bat making custom fishing lures.
Willard was an outdoorsman. He raised and trained bird dogs, was a hunter and an accomplished fisherman He was a charter member of the Central Indiana Anglers fishing club. Willard had his love of the outdoors, but that was second to his love of his family and his faith. He attended First Christian Church and had been involved in the El Shaddai Emmaus Community. He was a pilgrim on Walk #67. He enjoyed attending his grandchildren's sporting and music events.
Survivors include his children, Tim Hayes and his wife Pam of Brazil, and Sally Bass and her wife Kim Owings of Carlisle; grandchildren, Daniel Hayes (Allie Peters), Hannah Hayes, Darcy Harvey (Devin), and Damon Bass; two sisters, Nadine Rankin (Bill) and Donna James (Tub); nieces, nephews and the Hughes Family; and a special friend, Tamara Chaplin of Indianapolis; .
Willard was preceded in death by his parents Willard and Thelma Hayes; his wife Charlotte Hayes, September 6, 2014.
Services will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Lawson-Miller Chapel with Pastor Chris Greg officiating. Burial will follow at Clearview Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday evening from 5-8 and again Saturday one hour prior to services. Donations may be directed to the Alzheimer's Associations.
