Mr. Henry Wilson Archer, the County Surveyor for Harford county, was instantly killed on Wednesday night by being thrown from a buggy. He had been engaged during the day in surveying a piece of property near Cole postoffice, for John Hill, and in company with Mr. Wm L. Cooley, started for Bel Air, Mr. Archer being anxious to attend the celebration at the Masonic Temple that night. The accident, as far as can be learned, occurred between eight and nine o'clock, at a point on the Churchville road near the residence of Mr. James Jeffery. They were driving along slowly, when a team driven in the opposite direction caused their horse to plunge down the bank between the two roads, overturning the buggy and throwing both the occupants out. It is supposed that Mr. Archer's neck was broken, as the horse and buggy fell upon him. It is uncertain whether or not he spoke after he fell. Mr. Cooley was rendered insensible, and when he regained consciousness, Mr. Henry Koendres and wife, who live almost opposite the place where the accident occurred, had reached the place. Mr. Winfield Baker, a neighbor, was summoned and the body of Mr. Archer was put in the buggy and removed to Mr. Baker's residence. Mr. Cooley, who was badly bruised and cut, himself, recovered sufficiently to drive to Bel Air and notify Dr. William S. Archer. Mr. Henry W. Archer drove to the scene of the accident on Thursday and had the corpse removed to "Shamrock", the residence of Mrs. Henry W. Archer, from whence the funeral will take place on Saturday morning at 11:30, interment at Churchville Presbyterian Cemetery.
Mr. Archer was a son of the late Col. Robert H. Archer, of the Confederate Army. His mother was a Miss Davis. He was a native of Harford county, and was about 43 years of age. He was a Democrat, and as such had twice been elected as county surveyor. He was a member of the Harford county bar, but devoted most of his time to civil engineering. Mr. Archer had been engaged in straightening property lines to some of the oldest estates in the county. He was born near Rock Run, where he spent his early life. Later he moved to Baltimore, where he practiced law, coming to Bel Air 10 years later. He had his office with his cousin, Mr. George L. VanBibber. He was unmarried and kept "bachelor's hall" procuring his meals at the Eagle Hotel. The suddenness and awfulness of his death has cast a glom over the entire community.
