She was born November 16, 1938 in Elkhorn Township in Brown County, Illinois the daughter of Jesse, Sr. and Elva Mae Carpenter Smith.
She married Richard G. Behymer on December 18, 1955 in Mt. Sterling, Illinois and he preceded her in death on March 7, 2011.
Mrs. Behymer was a homemaker and assisted her husband as a bookkeeper for B & B Welding and Repair in Augusta, Illinois. Shirley had also worked for the Ammunition Plant in Burlington, Iowa and was a school bus driver for several years.
She attended rural Brown County Schools and then attended Brown County High School.
Shirley always enjoyed quilting, sewing, listening to music, hunting for mushrooms and raising flowers, but her greatest joy was spending time with her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, 5 brothers Lyle, Ray, Jesse, Jr., Glen and Oliver Smith and 1 sister Mary Parker.
At Shirley's request, cremation rites will be accorded and there will be no services or visitation. Memorials are suggested to Brown County Against Cancer or Cass-Schuyler Area Hospice and may be left at the Hendricker Funeral Home in Mt. Sterling.
The Hendricker Funeral Home in Mt. Sterling is in charge of the arrangements.
