Cornelius was born circa 1656 and died before 10 May 1746, which is when his will was proved. He took the Oath of Allegiance in Kings County, Province of New York between September 26 and 30, 1687, when he was living at Flackland (Flatlands).

On March 15, 1678, Cornelius purchased from Symond Hansen Van Norstrand, for 1600 gilders, a farm consisting of about 195 acres and including Lots 30 and 31 and other land in the Patent of the New Lots of Flatbush, Long Island, generally known as Oustwood. This property included all land lying between the present Pennsylvania Ave., and Van Siclen Ave. running from the Brooklyn and Jamaica Turnpike to the Bay. On this farm he resided until his death. He quickly demonstrated his ability and accumulated a considerable fortune. In 1701 with some others, he bought 1000 acres of land in Somerset County, New Jersey, which he sold at a considerable profit. On June 1, 1703 Cornelius purchased 1200 acres at Middlebush. When his sons John, Peter, Simon, and Jacob, were married, he gave 300 acres each to them.

Circa 1690, he and his wife made a joint will which is recorded in the town records of Flatbush. His wife dying first, he then made another will, in which he gave his sons Simon, John, Peter, and Jacob the several tracts upon which they lived containing 300 acres each. He devised a farm at New Lots between his two sons Nicholas and Hendrick, and they made a division of this farm. Nicholas taking the western half and Hendrick the eastern half, creating a lane as the dividing-line, which was called Wyckoff's Lane as late as 1890. It is now known as Wyona Street, in the 26th Ward of the Borough of Brooklyn, City of New York.

All six of his surviving sons had given their bonds in payment of the several farms each had received and the executors were directed to collect these bonds and pay certain legacies for his daughters.

On April 4, 1746, he made a will which is recorded in Long Island Source records. His will was proved May 10, 1746.
For many years he was a church warden of the Dutch Reformed Church in Flatbush of which he was a member.
He was probably buried in the Old Church yard nearly opposite the present New Lots Dutch Church and immediately adjoining the new school house. This is not the present graveyard adjoining the church. If so, his grave is unmarked.
