Although born in Pennsylvania,James could not be found in any U.S. Censuses prior the Civil War. He enlisted in the 2nd Regiment, California Cavalry, at San Francisco, Sept. 29, 1861 for a 3-year term of enlistment. He was discharged at Camp Douglass, Utah, Oct. 4, 1864 at the end of his term of service. On April 4, 1890 he applied for a soldier's invalid pension which was approved and issued as Certificate #904210 in Ohio, presumably while residing in Cleveland, but he appeared in only five Cleveland city directories between 1895 and 1913, listed as a laborer and then sexton for occupations. The only U.S. Census in which he ever appeared was that of 1910 for Ward 6 in Cleveland as 75 years of age, married once for 32 years, born in PA, with no occupation listed. His wife, Sarah, was 69, married once, also for 32 years born in Ohio. She has one child who was deceased. The apparently took in money as four boarders were listed in the household located at 3684 W. 15th Street. James was a member of the Brooklyn Post #368, Grand Army of the Republic, Cleveland, Ohio.

At the time of his death at 82 years of age from general debility and old age he and Sarah resided at 3855 W. 23rd Street in Cleveland. She applied for a widow's pension based on James's military service, Dec. 7, 1916 which was approved and issued as Certificate #833,544 in Ohio. Her date and place of death have yet to be determined.

According to the 1930s W.P.A. Veterans Survey Map James had no gravestone.
