Sioux Falls - Robert "Bob" Aamlid, Brandon, SD and formerly of Sioux Falls, SD, died December 20, 2017, at Bethany Home, Brandon, SD. He was 80.

Robert Leroy Aamlid was born April 14, 1937 in Bridgewater, SD to Abraham and Clara (Scharffenberg) Aamlid. He grew up in Bridgewater with his older sister, Shirley, and cousin, Phyllis, who joined the family after her mother's death. At age II he traveled with his father to Abraham's homeland, Norway, to spend time with family, learn a bit about his cultural heritage, experience Norwegian food (yes, he liked lutefisk), and pick up a little of the language (mostly words for which his mother would wash out his mouth with soap). He excelled in high school sports achieving first team all-state honors in six-man football and second team all-state recognition in basketball.

He majored in Economics at SDSU and was involved in Army ROTC. He met Sandra Lee, who would become his beloved wife, during his sophomore year, and it was a love-at-first-sight story. They were married December 28, 1958 in Sandra's hometown, Inwood, IA, and after graduation returned to Bridgewater to build their life together and raise a family. Robert owned and operated an oil business with his primary involvement being with the bulk agricultural portion; he was also a partner in an agricultural services/fertilizer business. He was a boat salesman at the end of his work career and that fit nicely with his passion for fishing that he inherited from his father (and has passed on to his son and grandsons).

His military involvement continued until receiving an honorable discharge June 17, 1968. At that time he had ascended to the rank of captain and was the commanding officer of his Army Reserve unit, the 653rd Quartermaster Co. Comments from his superiors include: can depend on…to complete an assignment or accomplish a mission in a very effective and efficient manner; neat, cheerful officer, being forceful when the situation requires it; good morals, religious, and has the respect of those around him; puts forth freely of his effort and frequently does more than is asked of him. He was a shooter on a championship rifle team and was later known amongst his deer and antelope hunting camp buddies for an ability for long and accurate shots.

The attributes noted by the military were evident in his civilian life (and parenting). He joined with other Bridgewater businessmen and farmers to push development and promotion of the community as a good place to live, and work, and grow. He was quite active with the Bridgewater alumni group and was a leader of the successful effort to fundraise for and build a new football field and track. Hometown hero, Sparky Anderson, coach of the world champion Cincinnati Reds and later Detroit Tigers, became engaged with the project and the new facility was named for him.

Robert and Sandra were tireless supporters of their children and grandchildren in their involvement with activities whether academic, or music, or athletic, or community service, or anything else. Basketball and football referees have smilingly mentioned that they were aware of his game attendance. Throughout his life he remained involved in the Lutheran church and remained a fervent supporter of all things SDSU.

He is survived by his children; son, Brian and wife Denise; daughter, Cindy and husband John Chisham; daughter, Sharon and husband John Miner; 11 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; sister, Shirley Donnelly; and Phyllis Wettergreen. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sandra, and his parents, Abraham and Clara.

Funeral Services are scheduled for 10:30am Wednesday, December 27, 2017, at First Lutheran Church, Sioux Falls, SD. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 Tuesday afternoon at Miller Funeral Home, 507 S. Main Avenue. Interment will be at Richland Cemetery, Inwood, Iowa.

Memorials may be directed to the First Lutheran Church Caring Ministry or to the Bethany Lutheran Foundation, 3008 East Aspen, Brandon, SD.
