Burleigh Walter Binning (Henry Binning, Jeffrey Binning)

07 Jul 1878 in North Fork, Delaware County, Iowa, the 6th child of 7 children born to Hannah Betts and Henry Binning was a son named Burleigh Walter Binning.

23 Jun 1909 in Rock Springs, Sweetwater County, Wyoming, at the age of 30 Years, 11 Months, 16 Days, Burleigh Dean Binning married Margaret Ellen "Ella" Rogers.

The marriage of a very promising young couple occured at the Methodist church Wednesday afternoon. Mr. Burleigh Binning of Cora, and Miss Margaret Ella Rogers of Davis City, Iowa. Mr. Binning is a prominent young ranchman of Cora.

HENRY BINNING DISPOSES OF RANCH AND CATTLE
A ranch deal of considerable importance was comsummated this week when Henry Binning disposed of his ranch and cattle to his brother Burleigh Binning. The Binning brothers were among the first to locate in this section and both have accumunited large holdings, their ranches lying near each other form 8 to 11 miles north-west of Pinedale. Henry Binning contracted his outfit to Guy Decker a couple of years ago but it was just recently turned back, Mr. Decker having decided to leave. The new acquisition places Burleigh Binning among the largest land holders of the upper Green River county, and will be surpassed by very few by the number of cattle owned.

BURLEIGH BINNING PASSED AWAY FRIDAY, AUGUST 1
As we go to press this morning we are informed of the sad news that Burleigh Binning, 68, prominent rancher of the Cora district passed away August 1. "Burl" had been ill for the past week at the L.D.S. Hospital at Salt Lake City. He had expressed the desire to return home to his ranch and passed away at six o'clock Friday evening, August 1, in Echo Cayon in Utah as he was being brought home by ambulance.
At his side during his last illness were his wife, son Dean, and daughter Margaret, who arrived in Salt Lake several days ago from Omaha. Funeral services will be Tuesday afternoon August 5 at 2:00 o'clock. Services will be at Community Hall Pinedale. Burl and his brother Henry, who passed away many years ago, came to this scetion of Wyoming in the spring of 1889 to homestead what is now one of the most attractive ranches in Sublette County. Always a man of boundless energy, few persons realized that he had been in failing health for the past several years.

FUNERAL SEVICES HELD TUESDAY FOR BURLEIGH BINNING PIONEER RANCHER
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon August 5 at the community Hall in Pinedale for Burleigh Binning, 69 pioneer rancher of Sublette County who passed away on Friday August 1 as he was being brought home to his ranch from Salt Lake City where he had been ill for a week in the L D S hospital. Death was attributed to a rare disease known as Hodgkin's for which an effective cure is not known.
The impressive services were conducted by Rev. Judson Leeman of St. Andrews In The Pines Episcopal Church. Three beautiful hymns, The Old Rugged Cross, Nearer My God To Thee and I Know Not Where, were sung by Mrs. Armand Allard with Mrs. George Rowland as accompanist. The profuse floral tributes were mute expressions of sympathy from the many friends of the family.
Interment was made in the Pinedale cemetery beside his son Willard, who passed away in 1935. Pall bearers were chosen as requested by Mr. Binning from men who had been employed at the ranch through the years. They were Lester Faler, E.W. Kape and Wallace Smith, Pinedale, Dennis Mitchell, Boulder Kenneth Parry, Rock Springs and Maxwell McCart, Mclelland, Iowa.
Burleigh Binning was born near Waterloo Iowa on July 7 1878 the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Binning. He passed away August 1 1947 at the age of 69 years.
Deceased was numbered among the pioneer ranchers of Sublette County having come to this section of Wyoming 48 years ago in the spring of 1899 where he homesteaded what is now the present ranch. A few years later he was joined by his brother Henry who also took up land neighboring Burl. His brother passed away about fifteen years ago.
In 1909 Burleigh Binning was united in marriage to Margaret Ellen Rogers of Des Moines, Iowa. They have made their home continuously since then at the present ranch which has been built by them into one of the most attractive and well socked ranches within Sublette County. Visitors were always welcome at the ranch and treated with true western hospitality.
Deceased is survived by his wife, son Dean and daughter Margaret. There are also four grandchildren, Joella Burleigh, Dean and Wilard Robert Binning and Judy Story. Two sisters also survive, Laura Palmer of Glen Ellyn Illinois and May Worrall of Phoeniz Arizona, who were unable to attend the services.
Coming from a distance to attend the funeral services were Mr. and Mrs. Lester Binning, Payson Utah, Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Binning, Van Wert, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. Court Tisher and son Tharon, Council Bluffs, Iowa, Bert Binning , son Doyle and daughter Mary Lou of Van Wert, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. Orville Triplett and daughter Donna and Mr. and Mr. James Triplett of Council Bluff, Iowa, Mrs Clyde Watson and son Lowell and Harry Redman of Van Wert, Iowa, Grant Porter brother in law and Mrs. Binning of Des Moines Iowa, Maxwell McCar, McClelland Iowa, Roger Little, Omaha, Byron Palmer Chicago Illinois, Attorney James Greenwood and daughter Marjorie of Cheyenne, Max Story Salt Lake City, Utah and numerous friends from Rock Springs and throughout Sublette County.

Started from a nucleus Oct 18, 1899 when its beginning was purchased from Andrew Delmu and wife that year. It originally was called Cora and was a post office, freight and lodging place of 160 acres for the people on their was to the tie camp on Green River. The post office in a period of years was moved to various places and now is located and still called Cora after the woman who used to carry the mail and at one time operated the postoffice in her home-Mrs. Cora Westfall.

This 160 acres was purchased by Burleigh W. Binning and his brother Henry on Oct 18,1899. Burleigh came to the Green River Valley from Grand River Iowa at the age of 19 and lived and worked around prior to this purchase, at various trades. He was a pioneer of the locality for a period of 50 years of his life.

Burleigh and his brother gave up the post office after a while and went in for homesteadin, and beginning purchases which were to build up extensive ranch holdings. In 1926 Burleigh bought Henry's holdings and had added to what he to accumulated make a good size ranch.

He married Margaret Ella Rogers of Davis City Iowa on June 23 1909. Her holdings were added, also to the ranch.

To this union of Burleigh and Ella were born three children, Burleigh Dean, Willard Robert, now deceased, and Margaret, now Mrs. Harold Vincent of Orion, Michigan.

Burleigh W Binning died Aug 1, 1947 and upon settlement of his estate his son Burleigh purchased the interests of the heirs. Together with what holdings he had the place now amounts to about 10,000 acres.

Burleigh W bought and built his Hereford herd from registered Domino Herefords purchased in Iowa from 1912 to 1925. Since that time he purchased best breedings from various livestock shows.

He was a hard and determined, yet kind hearten individual, with a great perseverance and foresight to build the place to the high standard it held at the time of his death.

Burleigh Dean with such a good background of Hereford breeding stock has strived to uphold this fine Hereford breeding stock which his father started many years ago. He and his wife Josephine, His sons Burleigh Jr. and Willard Robert, and his daughter Joella, help him to carry on the same good quality in all their efforts as the father did in the past.

To date this ranch has been built up to be one of the largest and best producing ranches of the Green River Valley. The ranch has some of the best rated Herefords, extensive hay lands and wonderful scenery in the west.
