Dr. Arthur W. Ralls, Sr. founded the hospital called Ralls Sanitorium, later renamed Forrest General Hospital that eventually became Baptist Hospital and currently known as Gadsden Regional Medical Center .

Illness Claims Dr. A.W. Ralls

Dr. Arthur Williams Ralls, Sr., 80, one of the leading surgeons of Northeast Alabama for more than 30 years and who established one of the first hospitals in this section of the State, died at 8 p.m. yesterday at the resident of his daughter, Mrs. Thomas H. Cross, Crown Point Avenue. He had suffered a long illness. Dr. Ralls was one of the pioneer families of Gadsden being the son of the late Rev. and Mrs. Hamilton B. Ralls and the grandson of the late Dr. and Mrs. John P. Ralls of Gadsden. He received his medical degree from Emory University, later studying at the University of Berlin and the University of Munich. He began the practice of medicine in Gadsden in 1902 and retired in 1948. Dr. Ralls served as Captain in the medical corps of the US Army during World War I. He was a member of the Etowah County Medical Association, American College of Physicians and surgeons and First Methodist Church, Gadsden. He was also a member of Gadsden Rotary Club, being a past president. He was past president of Gadsden Chamber of Commerce and past chairman of Methodist church board stewards. He held other membership in Alabama State Medical Society, Southern Medical Association, American Medical Society and Southeastern Surgical Congress. He was a trustee of the Alabama School of Trades and Snead Seminary. While active in civil life of this community, Dr. Ralls was among those instrumental in bringing the Trade School to Gadsden and one of the principal leaders in attracting Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. to this city. Funeral service at 3 p.m. tomorrow at Collier-Butler Funeral Home. Burial in Forrest Cemetery. (Active and honorary pallbearers were mentioned in the article.) Dr. Ralls is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Tom Cross, Gadsden; Mrs. O.A. Trawick, Mobile; and one son, Arthur W. Ralls, Jr., Gadsden.; 4 brothers, Hamilton, J.C. and Frank Ralls of Georgia and John Ralls of California; 4 sisters, Mrs. J. Ross Philips, Sr.; Mrs. Grady Gallant; Mrs. Oscar Freeman and Mrs. Boyd Philips all of Gadsden; 8 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. He was a native of The Grove, Texas.

The 1930 Gadsden, Etowah Co., AL census shows Dr. A.W. Ralls, Sr. living on 6th Street and adjacent was the Forrest General nurses home where student nurses lived. It appears that Dr. Ralls and his family had living quarters at the hospital. The 1940 census enumerates Dr. Ralls as a medical doctor/surgeon at the 6th Street address. Dr. A.W. established Ralls Sanitorium which later became Forrest General Hospital at 6th Street and 12th Street. The hospital was purchased and renamed Baptist Memorial Hospital at a new location and is currently known as Gadsden Regional Medical Center.
