Jean Alvord Donohue PhD

Jean Donohue died peacefully at home in Seattle on June 27, 2016, one day short of her 92nd birthday. Born in Buffalo, NY, to Sherman and Elsie Gilbert Alvord, Jean graduated HS from The Buffalo Seminary. She earned a BA in English with Honors at Skidmore College, Syracuse, NY, in 1946; an MEd degree from Seattle U.; a Doctorate from UW in 1983.

An advertising manager in Buffalo, she met her future husband, Richard Donohue, while skiing in Canada. They married in NY in 1952 and then settled in Seattle after a skiing honeymoon across the US.

Jean was a strong advocate for women's intelligence and equality. As a women's vocational counselor at UW and in private practice and seminar planner at Edmonds Community College, Jean saw the need for women to join together to support each other in the job market. She envisioned and co-founded The Women's Professional and Managerial Network in 1978. She planned national speakers and events where professional women could connect to promote careers and women's influence in business and community.

Jean always stayed involved in the Seattle community. She was a member of many organizations and participated in various committees and boards. Among these, Jean served on the Board of Directors for: Junior League of Seattle, Seattle Repertory Theater, Seattle YWCA, Women + Business and she sat as a Trustee on the Board of Group Health Cooperative. Her last board position was at Skyline Retirement Home. She was a member of the Seattle International District Rotary, one of the first women to join.

She loved to swim, ski, collect antiques, listen to classical music and was an avid reader, favoring mysteries. Her passions included traveling with her husband Richard to many places around the world, visiting the South Pacific, the Caribbean, Mexico, South America, New Zealand, Australia, Asia and most of Europe.

Jean will be remembered fondly for her determination, focused action, sense of adventure, keen intelligence, bright personality and love of family.

Preceded in death by Richard (2009) her husband of 58 years. Survived by four children: Linda Donohue Duncan (Fax), Cary Donohue (Brigitte), Thomas "Tad" Donohue (Tanya) and Kevin Donohue; five grandchildren Katherine Duncan Olson, Gregory Duncan, Lauren Donohue, Blake Donohue and Reed Donohue; and one great-grandson, Henry Olson.

The family wishes to express heartfelt thanks to Tuli Maisema, Soni and Dee for excellent, loving care of Jean for the last two years. Remembrances may be made to Seattle YWCA and Int'l Dist. Rotary.

Friends are invited to Center for Urban Horticulture, 3501 NE 41st Street, Seattle, WA 98105 on Friday, August 5, 2016, at 1:00 p.m. to celebrate the life of Jean Alvord Donohue.
