Mr. John Ogburn Blackburn age 78 of Blairsville passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 17, 2017 in the Union General Hospital following a brief illness.

John was born November 5, 1939 in High Point, NC. His parents were Robert Russell Blackburn and Mary Lanier Ogburn Blackburn. They were born on farms in Guilford County, NC. John had one brother, Robert Russell Blackburn Jr.

John attended High Point public schools and graduated from High Point High School in 1957. He was elected class president his senior year. He enjoyed volunteer work with the student radio station WHPS. He was selected for Beta Club and the National Honor Society. He received a Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps scholarship and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, graduation in 1961.

He married a high school classmate, Kaye Elizabeth Green, in June 1960. He served 23 years in the Navy. He retired to Hawaii and later Texas. His wife Kaye died in 2001. They had four children. Other survivors are grandchildren, and step children. John and Ann moved to Blairsville in 2011. After moving to Georgia, John continued delivering Meals on Wheels, an activity he joined in Texas in 1997.

During his Navy Career John was awarded the Bronze Star with combat V for actions during service as an advisor to the Vietnamese Navy at a junk (Coastal Patrol Craft) base, the Meritorious Service Medal (with 2 stars) and various campaign ribbons for his service in Viet Nam and the Navy. He commanded the USS Cayuga (LST 1186) and USS Chipola (AO-63). Other duty assignments included first lieutenant and main battery officer of USS Corry (DDR-817) and operations officer of USS Liddle (APD-60).

No services are planned at this time. In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that donations may be made to Meals on Wheels in memory of Mr. Blackburn.
