George was born in Center Point, a small community in Doddridge County, West Virginia,. While his first marriage in 1941 to Ella Mae Harris ended in divorce; they had one daughter Bonnie Rae in 1943. During World War II he enlisted in the US Army and mustered into service at Fort Hayes in Columbus, Ohio. After the war he went to work for the Agency for International Development. While stationed in Pakistan he met Olinda Croci, another employee of the Agency. He invited her on a Wild Board Shoot for their first date. Three weeks after meeting they were married in a Catholic ceremony in Lahore, Pakistan. Within two and a half years a boy, G.L. Britton II, and a girl, Linda Severine Britton, had been born and were thriving in this foreign land.

George's work took the family around the world: Pakistan, Japan, Sudan, Vietnam, and Kenya. IN 1968 the family finally settled in Moscow, Idaho and put down roots. It was there in 1995 that George passed away.
