However, she was apparently raised by James Caudill after her mother, Lovell Brown, married him on August 20, 1935, in Blackey, Letcher County, KY; Nella was three years old at the time. Lovell was previously married to Stanley Smith on November 20, 1928, in Blackey, Letcher County, KY, and they had at least one daughter, Janice (Smith) Mitchell. So far, it is unknown whether Lovell and Sam Back were ever married since no marriage record has been found for them. As an adult, Nella apparently used her mother's maiden name of Brown. Nella's name was listed as Nella Faye Brown on the marriage record for her and her husband, Dan Rose Caudill; they were married on April 29, 1951, in Ulvah, Letcher County, KY. Nella was listed as Fay Brown on the marriage records of her son, Danny Ray Caudill (and his wife, Anita Caudill); and her daughter, Deborah June Caudill (and her husband, Dorse Wayne Back). She was listed as Nella Brown on the marriage record of her son, Sammy K. Caudill (and his wife, Connie Jean Whitaker) and as Nella Caudill on the marriage record for her daughter Diana Lynn Caudill (and her husband, Ronald Lynn Hurt). Nella used the Brown maiden name for at least three of her children's birth records.
