Strong and steady, determined and honest, family-oriented and hard-working are a few words to describe ‘BR’ Baxter Reynolds Gordon, Jr., who went to be with the Lord Saturday, January 13, 2018. The oldest of 11 children, BR was born on July 7, 1930 in Holdenville, Oklahoma to Thelma [Bennett] and Baxter R. Gordon.

His childhood was spent in Holdenville where he played football and graduated from high school.

When Communist North Korea attacked South Korea in June 1950, BR was called to active National Guard duty. For two years he served with the 45th Infantry, Battery C 171st Field Artillery Battalion during the Korean War. As a corporal, he received an honorable discharge in 1952.

He moved to Ada, Oklahoma to study at East Central University. While studying for a business degree, BR met the love of his life, Sue Boucher. They fell in love and married September 3, 1955. They had two children, Joni Kay [Davidson] and Ronald Dean.

BR was a career accountant at Kerr McGee Corporation, an oil exploration and production company. He was affectionately called the ‘weekend cowboy,’ and maintained a herd of limousin cattle on his land outside Oklahoma City. His family watched his work ethic and though he didn’t say, they knew he expected the same from them.

He was a man of a few words, yet he spoke great wisdom at home and church. BR and Sue were lifelong, active members of Western Oaks Christian Church, Disciples of Christ. From the early days before the current building was built, BR served as a leader. He was a deacon, later an elder and previously served as church treasurer.

BR loved spending time outdoors whether it was golfing, or fishing and hunting with his brothers. For years, the family vacationed for three weeks in Colorado.

BR is survived by his wife of 62 years, Sue; his daughter, Joni and Jon Davidson; his son, Ronald and Lori [Manning] Gordon; granddaughters, Madeline Gordon, and Lacey Crocker and husband Dustin; great grandsons, Mason, Maverick and Daxtin, four bonus grandchildren and several bonus great-grandchildren.

Additional survivors include BR’s younger siblings: Joyce Dempsey; Willard and Faye Gordon; Barbara Cummins; Ronnie and Andi Gordon; Donna Klick; Peggy and Bill Wilmeth; Karen Brock, John and Rilda Gordon and Harold and Jennie Gordon; Sue’s brother, Don Boucher, numerous nieces and nephews and cousins. BR was preceded in death by his parents; his youngest sister, Tammy; three brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law.

Mercer Adams Funeral Service, located at 3925 N. Asbury, Bethany, OK 73008 will handle arrangements. Viewing is Sunday, January 21 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and the family will be present from 2-4 p.m. The funeral is Monday, January 22 at 10 a.m. at Western Oaks Christian Church, 8100 NW 23rd Street, Oklahoma City. Interment follows at Spring Creek Memorial Cemetery, 14300 County Line, Oklahoma City.
