Douglas was a World War II veteran. He volunteered at age 17 and served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Ocean Theater. He spent his career working in the coal mining industry, including positions as superintendent for Alabama Power at Gorgas Mines and later as manager-fuel field operations section for Southern Company Services.
