The daughter of Oscar Buck and Cynthia Allen. Her father, Oscar Buck (b 1836, d after 1880) was born in Illinois. Her mother, Cynthia Allen (1839-1893) was born in Texas. Hattie and her family resided in Coffey Co., Kansas prior to 1870, where her father was a farmer and carpenter.

On 15 March 1887, Hattie Buck married Luke L. Short in Oswego, Labette Co., Kansas.
