Karen DeNardo, age 67, of Joliet, IL passed away peacefully January 16, 2018 at her home in Joliet surrounded by family and friends after a short battle with a secondary cancer.
Karen met her late husband, Dr. Mamdauh H. Abou-Youssef, at the University of Illinois during the International Fair while pursuing her bachelor’s degree in biology. They married in 1977. She had a lifelong passion for music which was manifested in her love of playing the piano and dancing, was a longstanding member of Joliet Chamber Music Society, and frequent attendee at the Chicago Symphony. She also had a desire to explore, learn, and serve her community. She was a teacher of science, a research and clinical medical technologist, a parishioner and lector at St. Paul the Apostle, and had recently become President-elect of the Exchange Club of Joliet.
Karen showed unending bravery and perseverance after being diagnosed with and surviving multiple myeloma since 1996. This diagnosis never dulled her shine and she remained unapologetically herself. She brought laughter, knowledge, and love to all who encountered her. She had a boundless zest for life.
Karen is survived by two children, Amirrah Abou-Youssef and Dr. Adam Abou-Youssef, sister Judith DeNardo, her beloved dog Roxy and numerous cousins.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, Dr. Mamdouh Abou-Youssef (2015); her parents Philip and Albina (Wielgosz) DeNardo; her maternal grandparents Karol and Helen (Prajzner) Wielgosz and paternal grandparents Philippe and Maria (DiPietrantonio) DeNardo.
Funeral from the Blackburn-Giegerich-Sonntag Funeral Home Monday, January 22, 2018 at 9:30 a.m. to St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. Interment Woodlawn Memorial Park. Visitation Sunday 2 p.m. – 6p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Exchange Club of Joliet would be appreciated.
