While at the scene of a motor vehicle collision involving a tractor-trailer that had run off the side of a highway due to icy conditions, the driver of a second vehicle, a pickup truck pulling a trailer, lost control and crashed into scene. Several people were struck and injured, including Deputy Fire Chief Russell Achord, who was pinned under a vehicle. Fellow responders rushed to extract Chief Achord and provided medical aid measures while he was transported to the West Feliciana Hospital where he died from his injuries.

He began as a volunteer firefighter with the West Feliciana Fire Protection District more than 24 years ago. He has had an accomplished career as a paramedic, a law enforcement officer and firefighter. The last three and a half years, he has served as the Deputy Fire Chief of West Feliciana Parish. He was proud to have beaten lymphoma in the summer of 2017.

Chief Deputy Achord is survived by his wife and two children. He is also survived by his father David; mother Shirley; two sisters Regina and Misty; Mother and father in law Patti and Charley; Sister in law Danielle; sister-in-law Angela; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by: Grandmother Mary Frances Chandler; Grandfather Millard Chandler; Grandmother Jan Achord; Grandfather Lester Achord; Step mother Linda Holley Achord; and beloved pet SaraRose.
