My favorite uncle. After retirement from the Army, Uncle H.J. moved first to Newton KS, his home town, and where his parents still resided. We always had fun there playing croquet, tag, hide ‘n seek with the cousins and the neighborhood kids. I remember they lived near the train station and around the corner from a Peter Pan ice cream store, and it was always a treat to go there. Near the time Grandma and Grandpa died in an automobile crash, Uncle H.J. moved his family to El Dorado and lived on the 2nd floor of the roller rink he bought. What a blast to visit! All the kids in the town came — roller skating was a big deal with kids in the 60’s, at least in this town it was, Uncle H.J. got along with all of them, gave them jobs — it was my favorite place to visit in all the world. We played broom hockey and at night with the lights off played hide-n-seek. He and Shirley lived in El Dorado until the 1990’s and moved to Hot Springs, Arkansas.
Uncle H.J. was my dad’s best friend. He was a good, honest, fun-loving man.
