"The body of Mr. Hugh Cowling,former sergeant of police of Montgomery, who died Tuesday in Gulfport, Miss., passed through Montgomery yesterday morning en route to Elmore Station, where the interment took place yesterday afternoon in the family burial plot. Mr. Cowling was well known in Montgomery. He served for seven years on the Montgomery police force as patrolman, mounted patrolman, as day sergeant and then again as mounted patrolman. Two years ago he resigned from the Montgomery force and went to Gulfport to engage in business. At the time of his death he was about thirty-five years old. Mr. Cowling is survived by his wife, who was Miss Parker of Shelby county, a sister of Dr. Parker, formerly a well known physician of this city. He had wide family connections in Montgomery, Shelby and Elmore counties."
