Woodleaf - Graham Franklin "Happy" Rice, age 95, of Woodleaf, passed away Monday, April 22, 2013, at his residence. Born July 23, 1917, the son of the late William Luther Rice and Sally Elizabeth Watson Rice, Happy was a graduate of Woodleaf High School and a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the European Theatre during World War II. In Mr. Rice's early years, he worked for Raleigh Granite Company, which later was Martin Marietta Company. Mr. Rice was a farmer and raised beef cattle. He was a member of Unity Presbyterian Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly Ragsdale Rice, who he married on Aug. 8, 1938, and died July 28, 1993; sister Helen Everhardt; and brother William Melvin "Shorty" Rice. Those left to cherish his memory include his nephews, Allen Rice, Nelson Everhardt, Billy Everhardt; niece Rita Everhardt Smyre; good friend Muriel Campbell and her daughters, Susan Myers and Debbie Miller; along with many friends and neighbors who loved him. Many special thanks to Susan, Kevin and Allison Lankford, David Hastings, Renae and Steve Kluttz, and Tony Padgett who helped care for Happy and to the loving caregivers from Home Instead and Rowan Hospice and Palliative Care who helped make his last days more comfortable. Visitation and Service: Visitation will be held Wednesday, April 24 from 1-2 p.m. at Unity Presbyterian Church with funeral service following at 2 p.m. with Rev. Phil Hagan officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery with Military Honors by the Rowan County Honor Guard. Memorials: May be made to Unity Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 28, Woodleaf, NC 27054.
