Mary is a daughter of Moroni Smith McAffee and Alice Maria Hanks. She married Otto Anton Schlegel on October 20, 1919 in Provo, Utah. They became parents to two children: Thelma Rose and Robert Otto.

Otto died in 1965. Mary married Heber Chase Johnson Jr. on January 10, 1978 in Elko, Nevada. He died in 1981.
