2 Vacationers Die In Route 58 Crash
June 27, 1989|By KIRK SAVILLE Staff Writer
SOUTHAMPTON — Two Pennsylvania women were killed and four other people injured on "Suicide Strip" Saturday in a head-on crash involving two families returning from vacations.
Donna L. Palamar, 40, of Reading, and her mother-in-law, Anna Palamar, 72, of Pottsville, were killed when their van was struck by a pickup truck that crossed over into their lane on Route 58.
The 1988 Nissan pickup truck, driven by Mickey L. Holcomb, 19, of Southport, N.C., was traveling west when it drifted into the eastbound lane, sideswiped another vehicle and struck the 1975 Volkswagen van. State Trooper R.B. Whitley said Holcomb apparently bent down to look at something on the seat and moved into the other lane. Once he sideswiped the vehicle, Holcomb lost control of the truck, Whitley said.
Charges are pending, Whitley said. Alcohol apparently did not play a part in the accident, he said.
The accident occurred one mile west of Capron on a two-lane stretch of Route 58 that has earned the nickname Suicide Strip. In 1988, the stretch of road between Courtland and Emporia had 11 fatalities.
The road currently is being widened to four lanes. Saturday's wreck, which happened shortly after 5 p.m., occurred at a point in the road where concrete for additional lanes was in place. The new lanes were not yet in use.
Donna Palamar, who was wearing a seat belt, was driving the van, which spun around and turned over in the accident. Anna Palamar, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the van.
Joseph Palamar, 52, Donna's husband, who was not wearing a seat belt, also was thrown from the vehicle and suffered serious head injuries. He was taken to Southampton Memorial Hospital in Franklin and then transferred by Nightingale helicopter to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. He was listed in serious but stable condition on Monday.
Christopher M. Palamar, 15, Joseph's son, who was wearing a seat belt, was treated at Southampton and released.
The family was returning from Orlando, Fla., where they had been vacationing at Disney World.
Holcomb was taken to Norfolk General, where he was listed in satisfactory condition Monday. His mother, Elaine Y. Holcomb, a passenger in the pickup, was treated at Southampton and released. They were returning from a trip to New York.
